Results from AKC Tournament

The first tournament of 2019 was on Saturday. A fun time was had by all, and one of our new up-and-coming dogs, Panzer even came to cheer on the team. Below in no particular order are the results, I probably missed a tonne so this is just what I remember and/or that someone has reminded me of.

  • Snickers earned her CHDX title.
  • Scentsations (that's us!) had one run under 35 seconds for 10 points.
  • Honor (K9 Aptitude & Attitude) earned her SHDGMPCh title, that's 4500 points and the highest title possible in Scent Hurdle. She is the first dog to earn this title.
  • Vivee (Hyperosmia) earned her first points and is looking forward to a long Scent Hurdle career.
  • Honor earned her SHDGMPCh in the same race Vivee earned her first 5 points.

Scent Hurdle

The first two Scent Hurdle tournaments of 2018 are complete and are we off to an amazing start. This will be all words as I never once thought to take a picture at either tournament.

January 20
This evening we attended an AKC tournament at Spruce Meadows, we started very late due to the dog show running late but still managed to have a ton of fun. This was our new Miniature Schnauzer, Gandalf's first tournament and he managed several clean runs. Unfortunately Digger, another Miniature Schnauzer who is over 15 years old, was struggling with the jumps so Gandalf did not earn many points. He is at the beginning of his Scent Hurdle career though so its far more important that he learn to run clean, we'll worry about earning points later.... maybe - our team runs to have fun with our dogs not to earn the maximum number of points in a tournament. He did get his first 5 points for sure so congratulations to Shannon and Gandalf on their debut in Scent Hurdle!

This was also the occasion of our first 10 point run in many years. Cuda, Stark, Tonka, and Whistler  running together can run under 35 seconds. Amazing speed by these four dogs; congratulations to their owners Kay, Grace, Kris, and Julie for having such super-fast partners.

January 27
An independent tournament at Wet Creek, we ran two tournaments over about 5 hours. This was only Gandalf's second tournament and while he did cross over once and needed some help on a run or two he managed a number of clean runs. Excellent work for an inexperienced dog.

Whistler, Tonka, Stark, and Cuda managed three more runs under 35 seconds including one of 33 seconds. These four are fast! Speaking of speed even Ahab managed to be in a heat that ran 36 seconds, normally Ahab is so slow any heat he runs in has no chance of coming close to being under 35 seconds, the trouble with being an old tri-pawed, but he had a really good run that race. And as long as he still wants to play then he will play; we support our dogs through all stages of their career.

After this second tournament we had a few dogs reach some milestones Ahab and Tonka both earned their SHDM (Scent Hurdle Dog Master) titles at 500 points, Whistler earned her SHDMX-G (Scent Hurdle Dog Master Excellent, Gold) at 2000 points, and Gandalf has earned his first 30 points. He needs 20 more to earn his first title, if things go well he should be able to earn them in the next tournament.

Well done to everyone and a huge thank you to Ready, Scent, Go! for putting on their tournaments and to the AKC for letting Scent Hurdle race after the show.

Practice and Upcoming Tournaments

An excellent practice yesterday evening. Once again I forgot to take pictures. Still, all the dogs did really well.

Isis was able to focus and run all the jumps for her dumbbell and young Savvy and Mischief did well over the jumps. We're trying to see if Robbie will run for me so I spent a good amount of time trying to get him to pay attention to me instead of Kris. He tried but focusing isn't his strongest skill at the best of times. He's cute though.

The next two tournaments coming up are:

  • Saturday, June 17 at Wet Creek Stables
  • Saturday, July 1 at Fox's Acreage

Practice and Tournament

A rather late update on the team I'm afraid.

The last practice was a bit chaotic, the dogs all seemed to lack focus. We got through it all in the end though. And we were even able to practice some Flyball, which even Soccer-the-chronically-unfocused managed without too many mishaps.

At the tournament on Jan. 21 Digger (run by Lindsay) earned her next Scent Hurdle title and 2,500 points. This will probably be her last title seeing as she's 14 years old but what a fantastic run for a little miniature schnauzer. Congratulations to Kay, Lindsay and Digger!

And Jinx has had to retire from Scent Hurdle due to the onset of old age. She still wants to play but it is getting too hard for her so Kris has decided to retire her. Hats off to Jinx for a fantastic Scent Hurdle career.

Now it is time for the new, young dogs Mischief, Tonka, and Isis to start their careers.

Scent Hurdle Tournament

The first Scent Hurdle tournament of 2017 had 10 teams playing. Wow, that was a lot of racing, 45 races in one tournament, 9 for each team. Needless to say, there was only one tournament for the day. With fewer teams entered there will often be two tournaments in one day.

The team did well, OK we finished last, but far more importantly we had fun!

Isis and Tonka both had their first try at racing and it didn't go so well for either of them. Both newbies crossed over into the other lane on their first run and got pulled for the day. That's OK; you never quite know what will happen in that first tournament your dog runs in. They'll both get it with some more practice.

And little Robbie has become one of the more solid and reliable dogs, much to Kris' shock and amazement.

Scent Hurdle and Practice

Hmmmm, looks like I missed posting about the last Scent Hurdle tournament. The big news from that tournament is that Stark earned his next Scent Hurdle title. He is now Scent Hurdle Dog Master (SHDM). Congratulations Stark! With an honorable mention to Grace and Stephen for helping him to achieve this milestone.

At practice last night we had some new people. Naturally I forgot to take pictures and record names of anyone but hopefully we have some new Scent Hurdle dogs joining the team. A huge welcome to everyone who was there!
